Greetings LaTasha. I am delighted to have you as the feature on The Spotlight. Let’s start out with you telling us a few interesting facts about yourself.
How long have you been in business?
I have been in business now “officially” for 1 month. I say officially because I have always worked on computers for people since graduating tech school 7 years ago.
What is the name of your business?
PC PROWESS Mobile Computer Repair
What is the purpose of your business?
My business is here to provide excellent service for people experiencing problems with their home computers. I believe that having your computer repaired should not cause you a financial hardship.
Tell us what makes your business unique?
What makes my business unique is that I don’t just stop at repairing your computer. I am a teacher by nature, so I go above and beyond to teach my clients about the issue they were having, how it can be prevented and what to do if it should occur again. I also am available to answer any technical questions 24 hours a day, at no cost. I believe that when we are educated, we make better decisions.
What has been your greatest challenge on your path to entrepreneurship?
My greatest challenge has been overcoming my own self- doubt. Even when my business was just an idea, I immediately came up with several reasons as to why I could not do it. The primary one was being a black woman.
Do you feel you have faced any specific challenges as a Black woman?
I haven’t as a business owner, but working in the field for the past 6 years I have. Information Technology is a male dominated field, so I’ve often felt I have to prove I know just as much as the men in my field. Sometimes I’ve felt that my opinion or expertise wasn’t valued because I was a woman.
What is the most rewarding aspect of becoming an entrepreneur?
As a single mother, I love being able to be home for my son. I am able to volunteer at his school and attend functions that I was not able to when I was working full time in the corporate world.
Also, the sense of accomplishment is very rewarding. Knowing that I had an idea, and followed it through to fruition is wonderful.
Lastly, being able to be a beacon of hope for others, especially women, is fulfilling. I want to be an example, to let others know that if there is a dream or passion burning inside of you, follow it! You can do it! Don’t waste your precious years working a job you hate. Pursue your passion.
What are your future goals for (PC PROWESS)?
Long term, I would like to see PC PROWESS on the level of the big name brands such as those geeks that work at that big name electronics store (LoL)
I also would like to become a place of employment for women transitioning into the workforce. These could be women leaving a domestic situation, receiving social services but seeking a way out of the system, single mothers, etc.
Short term, I plan to see PC PROWESS transition from being a home based business to a store front in 3 years.
Now it’s time for me to pick your brain for a minute.
What are your thoughts on the current political climate in the United States?
What concerns me more than the climate in the United States is the climate here in Virginia. Our local voter turn out for the Governor election was much lower than that of the Presidential election. Now I know that traditionally this is always the case, but I would have liked to see the same excitement and fervor that surrounded our Presidential election surround our local one.
Our new Governor recently released his proposed budget cuts. A lot of these included programs for low-income residents. A lot of the much-needed programs may be cut. This can cause a ricochet effect that would send us backwards, not forward. We can’t focus so much on the big picture that we miss the minor details. We must be involved in the judicial process as a whole, not just when it is convenient to do so.
Well, since this was the “hot topic” in the media, what do you think about the Tiger Woods apology?
I think that it is a sad day for our country when a golfer apologizing to his friends and family for committing adultery is breaking news. It’s not like this was news because our country upholds strong moral convictions. We have become a nation that thrives off of sensationalism. It wasn’t news because he was apologizing; it was news because the media could continue to milk his story for headlines and ratings. With all that is going on in the world that is truly distressing.
Do you have any advice for people who wish to start their own business?
First, assess your gifts and talents. What do you do well? What do you like to do? I always ask; if there was one job you could see yourself doing for the rest of your life what would it be?
Secondly, learn your craft! It makes no sense for you to say you want to be a record producer and you know nothing about music! Read, read, then read some more. Become an expert in what you love. Take classes, the small business administration has a lot of free classes and information on their website.
Third, become knowledgeable about the process. I spent nights up until the wee hours of the morning just reading information on what is involved, what steps to take, etc. The library is a great source. I checked out tons of books on starting your own business. And best of all it’s free! ( can you tell, I love free stuff!)
Fourth, determine your target customer base and determine what makes you different from anyone else already doing it. There are plenty of people out there that can cook, what makes your food the best?
Lastly, Do it! Don’t let anyone say you can’t do it! There will be those who don’t support what you are doing, or may have negative things to say. Don’t allow this to stop you. Once you have a clear vision in mind, follow that vision to the end.
This was a very informative and inspirational interview. I would like to add that I have had Lil Red(my Vaio) serviced by PC Prowess and that you conduct your business with professionalism and integrity. Thank you LaTasha and good luck to you in all your future endeavors!
